PROTEC² CLIQ at St Oswald's Hospice

For more than 35 years, St Oswald's Hospice has delivered specialist care and support to adults, children and young people with life-limiting conditions. Ensuring medicines are secure, accessible and fully traceable is a critical part of that care, leading the hospice to partner with ABLOY UK to modernise its medicine management processes.

The hospice required a solution that would strengthen security, support compliance and provide greater accountability across its medicine storage facilities. Traditional mechanical keys and manual record-keeping made it difficult to maintain a complete audit trail, while staff needed quick and reliable access to medicines when caring for patients.

ABLOY UK recommended and installed PROTEC² CLIQ, an intelligent access management system that combines the convenience of electronic access control with the reliability of a mechanical locking solution. CLIQ cylinders were fitted to medicine cabinets, drug trolleys, fridges and storage areas throughout the hospice, allowing access permissions to be managed efficiently while creating a full audit trail of every key transaction.

To further enhance control and accountability, the hospice also implemented a Traka key management system. Together, the solutions provide a complete overview of who has accessed medicines, when access took place and where keys have been used, helping the organisation maintain high standards of governance and compliance.

The impact has been significant. Staff no longer need to rely on shared keys or manual signing procedures, enabling authorised personnel to access medicines quickly and securely when needed. The ability to track key usage in real time has improved accountability while reducing administrative burden for healthcare teams.

The wire-free nature of PROTEC² CLIQ also allowed the hospice to upgrade security without disruptive cabling or extensive building work. Following its success, the solution has been expanded into additional departments, including Children's and Young Adult Services.
